The codes and conventions of a horror film are set out like rules that must be applied in order to get a successful film. There are many people that can be presented as the villain in horror films such as supernatural things like the exorcist. Even though this is unrealistic, it makes it entertaining for the target audience. Usually in horror films, they tend to show the people living a normal life before anything strange or abnormal happens to them. This is effective as it sets the scene and the mood for the target audience and also lets them get to know the characters and their personalities before they all start changing.
Horror films are based towards teenagers and older audiences aged 15+ and so it is typical for the main victim in a horror film to be a teenager or a female as they are stereo-typically the weak and vulnerable ones. Horror films are made to be unsettling and are made to frighten people and so this is effective as they want to panic the audience and make them question'what is going to happen next?'.
The weather is usually wet and stormy which is better for a horror film as this is done to reflect the mood of a particular scene, creating a more realistic and terrifying atmosphere for the target audience.
